Cuba Libre celebrates 110 years

While I am primarily a beer and wine drinker, I do enjoy my occasional liquor and one of my favorites is Bacardi Rum. I like the rum for its smooth flavor and easy drink ability. It is one of those liquors that goes down with a bit of a kick but doesn’t overwhelm my senses. Who doesn’t enjoy the dark transparent look of rum rummaging around in a high ball glass with a few inconsolable ice cubes.

Of course, I frequently will mix my delectable rum with other tantalizing liquids to make for some great drinks. From the eponymous Pina Colada, Daiquiri, and Rum Runner to the recently popular Mojito, their flavors are cleverly complemented with a nice splash of smooth Bacardi. All of these great drinks go well with a tasty and flavorful meal. Personally I prefer Mexican as the cuisine of choice when I have a cocktail.

Lest you think I forget about the classic Cuba Libre drink I must point out it is celebrating 110 fantastic and tasty years this year.

What is and where did the Cuba Libre cocktail come from?

In 1900 a Captain on duty in Havana, Cuba walked into an American bar and asked for a cocktail consisting of a mix of Coca Cola, Bacardi and a splash of lime to celebrate a recent military victory. It was such a big hit with the soldiers that everyone in the bar quickly ordered one. Led by the Captain they all did a toast chanting ” Por Cuba Libre”, which means free Cuba. This cheer caught on and became synonymous with the drink itself and remains to this day. It is one of the things that make this drink timeless and still quite popular today. The Bacardi brand was originally created in Cuba in 1862 by Don Facundo Bacardi Masso.

So when I am out on the town for an evening or on a hot date and looking for something different I will always go in the direction of a smooth Bacardi rum drink, usually a  minty Mojito or coconut flavored Pina Colada. They always hit the spot and go great with my favorite Mexican food, especially juicy beef fajitas loaded with guacamole and cheddar cheese, which is one of my all time favorite dinners. Of course, who can pass up crunchy tortilla chips and yummy meat infused queso while you are eating? Not me!
